PORTLAND, Ore. — On a beautiful night at Providence Park, the Portland Timbers overcame an early deficit to defeat the Colorado Rapids 2-1 in a thrilling MLS matchup on May 28, 2025.
Colorado took the lead midway through the first half thanks to a moment of individual brilliance from Georgi Mihailovich.
The midfielder drove forward and struck a sensational goal that left the Timbers’ defense flat-footed, putting the Rapids ahead 1-0.
Despite the setback, Portland responded with energy and purpose.
Head coach Phil Neville’s clear directive to get more players into the box was evident throughout, as the Timbers pressed with intent.
Santiago Moreno was heavily involved, although he often found himself surrounded by Rapids defenders.
The hosts were handed a lifeline when a handball in the box was called against Colorado.
After a tense VAR check confirmed the decision, Felipe Mora stepped up to the spot—but his effort was denied by Rapids goalkeeper Adam Hansen, who guessed correctly and saved it.
Colorado had a chance to double their lead when Darren Yappi set up Kévin Kuti Pierrôt, but his effort was superbly saved by Timbers keeper Maxime Crépeau.
The match turned physical as both Yappi and Portland defender Finn Surman clashed heads in a brave aerial duel, momentarily halting play.
The turning point came late in the match when substitute Wayne Frederick was shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Davina Salla, reducing Colorado to ten men.
Capitalizing on the advantage, the Timbers surged forward.
Anthony, who has now scored six goals in six games against the Rapids, found the back of the net once again to equalize, celebrating with his signature “rock the baby” gesture.
Portland continued to dominate the closing stages. Moreno, Mascara, and substitute Kevin Kelsey all came close to adding to the scoreline.
De Costa Fernández nearly provided a late insurance goal, but his effort was ruled offside.
Despite a final push by the Rapids, the Timbers held on to secure all three points in front of their home crowd.
The win marks a crucial bounce-back for Portland, who have been seeking consistency in recent fixtures.
