Justin Devenny Reflects on Remarkable Rise from Scottish Leagues to Premier League and International Debut
Crystal Palace midfielder Justin Devenny has shared the inspiring story behind his meteoric rise from Scotland’s lower leagues to the Premier League, culminating in an FA Cup win, a new long-term contract, and his senior international debut for Northern Ireland—all within the span of two years.
Born in Irvine, Scotland, Devenny’s football journey began under the guidance of his mother, who coached him at grassroots club Galston F.C.
“She’s my biggest inspiration,” said Devenny. “She taught me to enjoy football and that nothing happens without hard work.”
Having joined Kilmarnock FC at the age of five, Devenny’s youth career was marked by persistent injury setbacks.
“I had to decide whether I’d sulk or get stronger,” he recalls. That resilience laid the foundation for his professional breakthrough.
After spells in the Lowland League with Broomhill and later Airdrieonians, where he played 45 games in the 2022/23 season and helped the club win promotion via the Scottish League One play-offs, Devenny’s talent began drawing wider attention.
“I was told after the final Crystal Palace had been watching me. I was smiling for a week,” he said.
Devenny joined Crystal Palace in August 2023, starting with the club’s Under-21 side.
His leadership quickly earned him the captain’s armband, and he led the team to victory in the Premier League International Cup.
A standout performance during a mid-season training camp and consistent form led to his Premier League debut against Fulham in November 2024.
A week later, he scored his first Premier League goal away at Aston Villa. “That’s where I want to be. That’s the level,” Devenny said.
Shortly after his debut, Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill called him into the senior squad. Devenny earned his first international cap against Luxembourg and has since added two more appearances for his country.
In January 2025, he signed a new contract with Crystal Palace, keeping him at the club until 2027.
“This is the next step in my career,” said Devenny. “Whether it’s at Selhurst Park or on international duty, I just want to keep pushing and take every opportunity.”
Now focused on continuing his development, Devenny has become one of Palace’s most exciting young talents and a rising figure in Northern Irish football.
