Chesterfield’s 2025/26 Campaign: A Season of Renewed Rivalries
Among the clubs looking to challenge for promotion next season are Chesterfield, who now face a tantalising array of familiar opponents.
Paul Cook’s Spireites are set to renew several historic rivalries, including with Bristol Rovers, a team they’ve not faced in league competition since the 2017/18 campaign. Their last competitive encounters produced home wins for each side. Although they clashed in a pre-season friendly two years ago, league points will be at stake again after an eight-year break.
Crawley Town also drop into League Two and rekindle an intermittent rivalry with Chesterfield. The clubs last shared a division in 2017/18, when both sides took three points apiece. Chesterfield won the away fixture, while Crawley triumphed at the SMH Group Stadium.
Cambridge United, who also return after relegation, enjoyed the upper hand the last time they faced the Spireites. In the 2017/18 season, Cambridge recorded a double over Chesterfield, winning 2-1 in Cambridgeshire and 3-2 away.
Perhaps the longest-awaited trip will be to Shrewsbury Town, who host Chesterfield in the league for the first time since the 2016/17 season. That year, Shrewsbury narrowly edged the home fixture while Chesterfield battled to a draw on home turf.
Familiar Foes Return: Barnet and Oldham Back in the EFL
Barnet secured the National League title after a season-long battle with York City, while Oldham Athletic earned their place through the play-offs, defeating FC Halifax Town, York City and Southend United in a gruelling campaign.
Dean Brennan’s Barnet will be no strangers to Chesterfield fans. The last time the two sides met, Chesterfield completed a league double in the National League, winning 4-2 at home and 2-0 away at The Hive. Both clubs were locked in a promotion race two seasons ago, and the rivalry now moves back into EFL territory.
Meanwhile, Oldham and Chesterfield renew a longstanding rivalry that saw both league fixtures end in draws last term—1-1 at the SMH Group Stadium and 2-2 at Boundary Park.
Chesterfield manager Paul Cook welcomed the challenge:
“There’s a real energy about this line-up. Some massive clubs, some big away days, and a lot of history. We know what it’ll take to be in that top mix.”
