Manchester United’s nightmare season has taken yet another hit as they suffered a shock defeat to a Southeast Asian Allstars team during their postseason tour.
Following a dismal Premier League campaign that saw them finish 15th, early exits from both domestic cups, and a Europa League final loss to Tottenham, this latest setback has only deepened the crisis at Old Trafford.
The Allstars, made up of top talents from Myanmar, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia, claimed a famous 1-0 victory over United.
The only goal of the match came in the 71st minute, scored by Myanmar’s captain, Mang Moang Luin, to the delight of a passionate local crowd.
Manchester United fielded a strong side, with key first-team players such as Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, and Harry Maguire all involved.
Alejandro Garnacho featured in the second half, despite growing speculation surrounding his future at the club.
Manager Ruben Amorim, speaking after the game, was candid about the situation.
“We were slow, and we still don’t have it in us to win every training session, every game,” he admitted. “But the important thing is that we didn’t have any injuries.
Some players were at risk, but we wanted to respect all the fans and put everyone on the pitch.”
Amorim expressed deep regret over the team’s performance and the season as a whole. “I feel always guilty.
I said that after the last game—I’m always guilty of the performance of the team, no matter what. Since my first day here, I’ve felt that way.”
The United boss also addressed the boos from supporters. “The boos from the fans, I think, is something that we need.
Maybe it helps. Every time we lost in the Premier League, they were there for us.
But if they see the way we play isn’t working, they will change how they behave.
Still, when we walk away, I feel they are always with us.”
As for changes in the squad, Amorim remained tight-lipped.
“I will not confirm anything. I have no news. There will be some changes, but that’s for you guys to talk about.”
Looking ahead, he emphasized the need for a reset and a new mindset.
“Today was completely different. During the season, in some games against Liverpool and City, we started believing and playing different football. That’s what we need—belief and confidence. We have to focus on the first game of the Premier League now. That is our focus.”
Manchester United will be back in action on Friday when they face Hong Kong, hoping to avoid another embarrassment and begin rebuilding ahead of the new season.
